A bit of history:
The club was founded in 1958 under the name 'Avanhard', Tavria played their first game in USSR Championship against Yaroslav based club Khimik. Overall Tavria played 132 clubs from 113 cities. They have played their last match in the competition against FC Uralmash Yekatirinburg.
After the fall of Soviet Union, Ukrainian Premier League was formed, and Tavria became one of it's founders. And eventually became the very first Ukrainian champion, defeating in the final, which was held in Lviv, Ukraine's most successful club Dynamo Kyiv. Having become the domestic champions the club earned a right to participate in UEFA Champions League, however they were knocked out in the first round by Swiss club FC Sion.
Tavria is also one of the 5 clubs to have participated in every season of the Ukrainian premier league. Their best performance in the Ukrainian Cup came in 1994, when they have beaten in the final by Chornomorets Odessa, on two other occasions they have reached semi-finals.
On December 29, 2005 club owner Serhiy Kunitsyn fired the team's coach, Oleh Fedorchuk. On January 5, 2006 Tavriya signed Mykhailo Fomenko for a half year contract.
