A bit of history:

From 1992 until 2001 there existed a club in Lviv with the same name. As amateurs this team won the Lviv Amateur Cup and were Lvivska Oblast Champions. The club entered in 1993 the professional ranks and progressed from the Ukrainian Third League to the Ukrainian First League until it was taken over by FC Karpaty Lviv in 2001 and renamed and converted to their 2nd squad or Reserve team, FC Karpaty-2 Lviv. Until 2008, this club still holds the record for being the only team from outside the Ukrainian Premier League that has progressed twice to the quarterfinals of the Ukrainian Cup competition.

The current FK Lviv is unrelated to the club that played in Lviv from 1992-2001. The current club was founded in May 2006. Club entered into the Persha Liha, as a replacement for bankrupt club FC Hazovyk-Skala Stryi, which also represented Lviv Oblast.

In its debut season FK Lviv reached 11th place and scored 45 goals, At the start of next season, in the beginning of September 2007 the club moved to the newly build stadium Knyazha Arena in Dobromyl, west of Sambir, arena was constructed by and named after Ukrainian insurance company Knyazha, who is club's main sponsor.

In 2007-08 season FK Lviv finished 2nd in the Persha Liha and were promoted to the Vyshcha Liha for the first time in their existence, making the club one of the founders of a newly formed Premier League.
