A bit of history:

Along with South American neighbours Guyana, Suriname compete in the North, Central American and Caribbean Zone, finding football life with their Caribbean counterparts more to their liking.

The side has not played terribly many matches outside of FIFA World Cup™ qualifying (they have participated in 12 qualifying campaigns dating back to 1938), and their best results came in the run-up to Argentina 1978 when they eliminated Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago to reach the final group stage of the region. Once there, they lost all five of their matches and amassed a -11 goal difference. However, what is behind that statistic is that they lost all of their matches by only a single goal except for one 8-1 defeat by Mexico.

Since then, Suriname have had precious little success, except notably at the expense of neighbours Guyana, but they have always fielded a team and been competitive in the initial qualifying rounds. Other than that, their main claim to football fame is as the birthplace of such internationally renowned Dutch stars as Edgar Davids and Ruud Gullit.

In the run-up to Germany 2006, Suriname beat Aruba before losing out in dignified manner to Central American powers Guatemala 4-2. Beaten they may have been, but the dedication and desire for self-betterment shown by Suriname could serve as a shining example for many of the other so-called "small teams" in world football. Reaching the second stage of preliminary competition for the 2007 Caribbean Cup will also serve as a springboard for South Africa 2010 qualifying.
