A bit of history:
Górniczy Klub Sportowy was founded in 1964 as the fussion of teams based in Katowice: Rapid/Orzeł, Górnik Katowice, Koszutka Katowice, Katowicki Klub Łyżwiarski, Katowicki Klub Sportowy Górnik, Górniczy Klub Żeglarski Szkwał. 4 years later -
9 August 1968 roku another team (Dąb Katowice founded in 1911) was merged to GKS.
The club was promoted to Polish top division in 1965, and tyhe first match they played against Górnik Zabrze in August 8th.
The club has never been a Polish Champion, but 4 times GKS finished the season on the 2
nd place (1987/88, 1988/89, 1991/92, 1993/94).
