A bit of history:
Ekstraklasa is the official name of the Polish football premier league. It was previously known as Orange Ekstraklasa until 2008.
The Ekstraklasa (former I liga) was founded as Liga Piłki Nożnej (LPN) on March 1st, 1927 in Warsaw, but a year earlier there was a seed of this. On December 4th, 1926 there was the conference in Cracow when 12 football clubs decided to create football league. 3 clubs from Lwów (LKS Pogoñ, KS Hasmonea and 1. LKS Czarni) and WKS Legia, KS Polonia and KS Warszawianka from Warsaw, Łódzki KS and FC Union Touring from Łódź, TS Wisła Kraków, KS Warta Poznañ, 1. FC Katowice and TKS Toruñ were the foundators of Polish Championship (Liga Polska).
TS Wisła Kraków was the first winner of Polish Championships (in 1927) but KS Ruch Chorzów and KS Górnik Zabrze won the most titles (14 each). Wisła Kraków is next with 10 and Legia Warszawa has 8 titles.
Polska Liga Piłkarska was administrating Polish football top division from 2003 to 2005. On June 14st, 2005 there was founded Ekstraklasa SA and this enterprise started to administrate the Polish football premier league (then Idea Ekstraklasa).
Currently Ekstraklasa has 16 teams. The winner automatically receives the Polish Championship title.
