Real Estelí FC was founded in 1960 as Estelí FC, but acquired its current name in 1961.
Six times national champions of Nicaragua, the club plays in the Campeonato Nacional de Fión (First Division National Championship) representing the northern city of Estelí.
An old version of the current official club crest - first used during 1999 - was originally designed by Arnulfo Rivera Zeledón and Johnny Herrera Vallejos. Subsequently the crest was redesigned and digitalised in 2000 by Nakor'd J. García and Michael D. Raney (World Football Organization).
The crown represents 'Real' (meaning 'Royal'). Similar crowns can be seen on the crests of many other clubs with the prefix 'Real' (such as Real Madrid FC in Spain).
Two gold stars mark the two national championships won by the club (in 1991 and 1999) while the red and white striped shield represents the club colours as used on team shirts.
The crest is complemented with the club name, its year of formation (perhaps oddly shown as 1961 - when the club name was changed - and not 1960 when the club was actually founded) and a football representing the sport played by the club.
Real Estelí FC plays at the Estadio Independencia - one of the biggest and best stadiums in Nicaragua (which has a population of just over five million). The club is knows by the nickname, 'Train of the North', coming as it does, from the northern region of Las Segovias.
Real Estelí FC has finished in the top five of Nicaragua's top division every year since 1986 and has achieved some of the highest attendances in the league during this fine run.
