A bit of history:

The characteristic head of the Greek hero Ajax has not always adorned the logo of the football club Ajax. Around the year 1900 the club's logo consisted of a random picture of a footballer in Ajax gear, surrounded by the text: 'Amst. Football-club AJAX'.

When Ajax celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1925 the image of the hero Ajax appeared fort the firsts time on the Delft blue commemorative plate. On 20 September 1928 the new logo, with the head of Ajax, appeared fort the first time in the club's magazine 'Clubnieuws'. Occasionally a shield in the colours red and white was incorporated in the logo. Although this shield did not form a regular part of the round club logo, it was, nevertheless, occasionally used tot show the club colours.

In 1991 the Ajax-logo was thoroughly changed for commercial reasons. Since that time the stylized Ajax head consisted of eleven lines, symbolizing the eleven players of a football team. The letter type opted for the words 'Ajax' and Amsterdam' was the Gill type.

In 1998 the 'new' logo was once again changed, this time consisting of only minimal cosmetic changes. The 'J' in the letter type was, for example adjusted, so that the right-hand leg of the 'A' of 'Ajax' forms a straight line with the underside of the 'J'.
