A bit of history:
With their Football Association formed in 1921, Netherlands Antilles have an unexpectedly long and consistent history in football. This is surprising partially because the nation made up of two groups of islands has progressively had less of an impact on the region's FIFA World Cup™ qualifying after some relative heydays in the 1970s and 1980s.
In the qualifying campaigns for USA 1994, France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002, they fell at the first hurdle. Disappointing results for a side that was one of the first Caribbean nations to attempt to qualify and one that has more experience than most of their neighbours.
In an effort to turn their fortunes around and reinvigorate the interest of their supporters, the Antillean FA appointed a technical director and put in place a long-term development plan. Aiding in this has been the construction of the Mordy Maduro Centre in Willemstad, Curacao, which was financed by the FIFA Goal Programme and has provided better facilities for the FA and its national teams.
The first returns on the investment came during 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying. After coming back from a first-leg deficit, the side beat Antigua and Barbuda to reach the second round where Honduras proved far too much and won out 6-1. This improvement from previous campaigns may well be a sign of an upward trajectory, however the side's one goal and one point in a last-place finish in their qualifying group for the 2007 Caribbean Cup will stand as a reminder that much is left to do.
