A bit of history:
Lega Pro is the current name for formerly known Serie C until June 20th 2008, name of the third and fourth highest football leagues in Italy. It is broken up into Lega Pro Prima Divisione (third tier) and Lega Pro Seconda Divisione (fourth tier).
In turn, Lega Pro Prima Divisione consists of two divisions: Lega Pro Prima Divisione/A and Lega Pro Prima Divisione/B, both of 18 teams. At the end of the season, four teams (two from each division) go up to Serie B and six teams (three from each division) go down to Lega Pro Seconda Divisione.
Lega Pro Seconda Divisione consists of three divisions: Lega Pro Seconda Divisione/A, Lega Pro Seconda Divisione/B, and Lega Pro Seconda Divisione/C, all of them composed of 18 teams. At the end of the season, six teams (two from each division) go up to Lega Pro Prima Divisione and nine teams (three from each division) go down to Serie D.
For both Lega Pro Prima Divisione and Lega Pro Seconda Divisione, teams are split into gironi (divisions) by geographical criteria.
