A bit of history:

After missing out on a place at the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, things did not get much better for Iceland in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2008 in Austria and Switzerland. Despite a few good results, such as the 1-1 draw with Spain or a pair of wins over Northern Ireland, they were unable to secure their ticket for the finals.

The competition proved to be too strong, with Sweden, Spain and Denmark all in Iceland's group, meaning that they never really stood a realistic chance of making it through to the continental finals. Regardless, they will have been particularly disappointed with a 3-0 defeat by lowly Liechtenstein.

This result sealed the fate of coach Eyjolfur Sverrisson, who did not have his contract renewed by the Iceland Football Federation. The former Bundesliga player vacated the hot-seat at the end of October 2007, and Iceland will be hoping that new man Olafur Johannesson gives them some new impetus for the qualifiers for South Africa 2010.

Iceland are thus hopeful of qualifying for their first ever final phase, either at a European Championship or a FIFA World Cup.
