A bit of history:
At Spain 1982, Honduras surprised the football world with their well-organised and skilful brand of football. However, although great things were predicted for the
Catrachos, they have failed to grace the final stages of the tournament since.
They are off on the right foot to setting that record straight, though, with a thunderous start to qualifying for South Africa 2010. After stuttering to a 2-2 draw in their second round first leg against Puerto Rico, the Hondurans turned up the heat at home to win out 4-0 (6-2 on aggregate).
Having missed out on qualification for Korea/Japan 2002 by just two points, the Hondurans hit rock bottom on the road to Germany 2006. For the first time in their history, they failed to even reach the hexagonal final stage, having been eliminated by Panama and Costa Rica in their preliminary group.
At least this bitter pill gave the Hondurans some time to regroup and recharge their batteries for the next attempt at qualification. On this occasion they have put their faith in the highly regarded Colombian coach Reinaldo Rueda, who took charge of his own national side during the qualifiers for Germany 2006.
The new coach, a great student of the game, has assembled a blend of youth and experience as he strives to recreate the glory days. Adapting a very professional approach to the task at hand, he quickly won over the players who recognise in his firm yet likeable manner a person who can lead them to bigger and better things.
Of course, Honduras can also rely upon the services of David Suazo, perhaps the best forward in all of Central America. The Panther, as he is known, combines explosive pace with an unerring eye for goal and has made big impression at Inter Milan, where arrived in July 2007 after a lengthy spell at Cagliari.
Suazo is the focal point of one of the region's most fearsome strike forces, which also includes the veteran Carlos Pavon, Julio Cesar de Leon (Genoa) and Carlos Costly (FC Balchatow). Also worthy of mention in the Honduran side are players of the stature of Noel Valladares (Olimpia), Amado Guevara (Motagua) and Maynor Figueroa (Olimpia).
With their side loaded with talent, supporters in Honduras are extremely optimistic about their team's chances in a difficult first CONCACAF group stage that also includes Mexico, Canada and Jamaica, with only two tickets to the final round on offer.
