A bit of history:
Geographically located in South America, Guyana competes in the North, Central American and Caribbean Zone. Apart from concerns about geographical consistency, the arrangement works out fine for the Guyanese who take their football quite a bit less seriously than the majority of their South American neighbours. Even in the less competitive Caribbean zone, they typically struggle. They have not won a FIFA World Cup™ qualifying match since 1980, did not even attempt to reach Korea/Japan 2002 and lost their pre-qualifying series for Germany 2006 to neighbours Grenada by an 8-1 aggregate scoreline.
The nation of approximately 700,000 actually formed a football association early in the century, though they did not join FIFA until 1968. Neighbours Suriname, who are also in CONCACAF, have had greater involvement in regional football and have been something of Guyana's nemesis, eliminating them from qualifying for the 1982, 1986 and 1990 FIFA World Cups.
Despite a poor record in qualifying for world football's quadrennial showpiece, 2007 caps a couple hot years of rapid development for the Guyanese. They enjoyed a two-year, 14-match unbeaten streak from 2004 to 2006 that saw the side leap over 70 spots up the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. Only just missing out on a place at the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup via goal difference to Cuba after impressing mightily at the Caribbean Cup of Nations, Guyana's spirits heading into South Africa 2010 qualifying are bound to be unusually high.
