A bit of history:
Having only founded a football association in 1980, Belize are generally considered the whipping boys of Central America. And though they have traditionally played very few matches with not-so-stellar results, the small country on the Caribbean coast is beginning to show some promise.
At the very least the Belizeans have competed in the qualifying tournaments for the last two FIFA World Cups™, which can only see them get better. Their debut in the run-up to France 1998 saw them draw a knockout home-and-away tie with Panama that ended with an aggregate score of 6-2.
The division of Central American qualifying into two groups ahead of Korea/Japan 2002 saw Belize double the number of matches they played and also earn their first point. Playing in Honduras, they won a hard-fought scoreless draw against powers Guatemala.
A difficult match-up with dependable Canada in qualifying for Germany 2006 ended in Belize's elimination once again. And though a pair of 4-0 losses was difficult to live with, the fact that the underdogs were only a goal down at the half of each contest is promising. That the team had to play both legs of the tie in Canada is not.
Despite some rough results, Belize have reason for cautious optimism ahead of South Africa 2010 qualifying. In the recent UNCAF Nations Cup, they held their own against Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Although they lost all three games, they were never easily beaten.
