A bit of history:

Although football has traditionally been regarded less than baseball and basketball in Chinese Taipei, the major international tournaments are followed very closely by the populace, and the islanders did produce one of the finest women's teams in Asia during the 1970s.

But, with no professional league and a squad made up of amateurs, their men's team has more often than not been fodder for their larger continental rivals. During the preliminary qualifying round for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™, they finished their group with no points, six defeats, no goals for and 25 against.

However, progress is being made in the island's football. A league was organised a couple of years ago and some decent results have emerged - a 2-1 victory over Singapore in an Olympic qualifier and an easy 3-0 win over East Timor in Asian Cup qualifying being the most notable.

Lack of competitive games and selection limitations again proved the problem for the team, a point borne out in the qualifying campaign for the previous FIFA World Cup when they finished in fourth place in a group that featured Uzbekistan, Iraq and Palestine. They struggled again n qualifying for the 2007 AFC Asian Cup when they again came away empty handed with zero points.

Under Japanese coach Toshiaki Imai, the islands made some consistent progress that saw them draw against regional rivals Hong Kong 1-1 before thrashing Macao 7-2 in qualifying for 2008 East Asian Football Federation Championship. They have not been given a kind draw in the qualifying preliminaries for South Africa 2010 with a two-legged clash against Uzbekistan. Despite the hard assignments, however, Imai's men will be eager to prove they can make up for the lack of firepower with their resilient play.
