A bit of history:

The Societá Sportiva Palestra Itália was founded by italian immigrants and descendants on August 26th 1914, on the city of São Paulo. It's original colours were the green, red and white, as in the italian flag. The first logo was round, with the club's name, monogram and eight stars, representing the month of August.

On it's shirt, Palestra Itália first used the red-and-white Savoie cross. From 1917 on the club used a white circle with the green and red monogram. Somewhere in the 30's the shirt badge's design was changed so the monogram would be more alike the one on the official logo. This shirt badge could sometimes appear with different colours combinations, like green circle with red monogram, green circle with white monogram etc.

In 1942, when Brazil took part on the World War II on the side of the Allies, a decree forbid all institution's name's that where related to the contries on the Axis' side. So, Palestra Itália became Sociedade Esportiva Palestra de São Paulo, removed the red from it's colours and the "I" letter of it's shirt badge. A new logo was created, similar to Palestra Itália's one.

However, in the same year the club was forced to change it's name again, this time because Palestra was a foreign name, and therefore not allowed too. So, in order to maitain the "P" letter on it's symbol, and to as well pay hommage to the extinct Associação Atlética das Palmeiras the club finally became Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras.

Palmeiras logo was only created in 1959; until then the club used the round badge with the white "P" as a logo. From 1999-2004 the club used four golden star over it's logo on the shirt, for it's four Brazilian Championships. Nowadays the club doesn't use any stars.
