A bit of history:

The Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama was a rowing club founded by portuguese immigrants and descendants in August 21st 1898 in the neighbourhood of São Cristóvão, city of Rio de Janeiro. The club was named after an important portuguese explorer. It's colours were the black and white. The club's first logo was created only in 1903: round with Vasco da Gama's caravel.

Vasco da Gama's main symbol, since it's foundation, is a red cross patteé. However, there are two historical errors with this cross. The first one is that the cross used by the portuguese navigators was actually an Order of Christ cross, not a patteé one. The second error is that this cross is named in the club's statutes as being a maltese cross, and therefore by almost all football fans.

In November 26th 1915 the Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama merged with Lusitânia Sport Club, a football club. Lusitânia was founded in 1913 by portuguese descendants as well, and was also a black and white club. It's logo was a golden armillary sphere. After the fusion, the name, symbols and foundation date of Vasco da Gama remained, and a football squad was formed.

In 1922 the club changed it's logo: black badge with a white dash, with the caravel and white monograms. This logo was redesigned in 1996.

In the shirt the club only uses, since it's foundation, the red cross patteé. In 1991 the club added three golden stars, representing the 1974 and 1989 Brazilian Championships and the 1949 Earth and Sea Champions (when the club conquered both football and regatta state championships). In 1995 the club added one more star, for the 1992-94 "tricampeonato". In 1998, one more star, for the 1997 Brazilian Championship. In 1998, another star for the 1998 Libertadores Cup. And in 2001 the last two stars, for 2000 Brazilian Championship and 2000 Mercosur Cup.
