A bit of history:
The Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas is the result of the fusion between the Botafogo Football Club and the Clube de Regatas Botafogo, in December 8th 1942. However, the official foundation is the one of Botafogo FC.
The Clube de Regatas Botafogo was a rowing club founded in July 1st 1894 in the neighbourhood of Botafogo, city of Rio de Janeiro. It's symbol was the "Estrela Solitária" (Lone Star), actually the Evening Star. The club was sometimes represented with several badges, all of them unofficial. In the shirt, CR Botafogo used two different badges: monogram with star on top from 1894-1919 and monogram inside the star, from 1919-1942.
In the same neighbourhood and with the same colours, Botafogo Football Club was founded in August 12th 1904. The club's logo, in swiss style with a black monogram, was drawn by Basílio Viana Júnior, one of the founders. From 1910-1930 the club used a slightly different design of this logo on the shirt, but after that the design of Basílio, official in the statutes, was used also on the shirt.
The logo of Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas represents the fusion between both clubs, with the shape of Botafogo FC and the Lone Star from CR Botafogo. According to the club's statutes, this logo can never be changed.
From 1979-2002 Botafogo FR used four golden stars on the shirt, representing the four consecutive State Championships 1932-35. From 2002-2003 the club added another star, in silver, representing 1995's Brazilian Championship. The club, then, abolished the use of any stars in the uniform.
