A bit of history:
Adelaide United FC was formed in September 2003, replacing Adelaide City in the now defunct National Soccer League.
Inaugural coach John Kosmina moulded a group of players for what was to be an exciting first season, where The Reds finished third on the table and third overall after the Champion’s playoff.
United’s first season saw the emergence of ‘The People’s Team’ and increased spectator turnouts that were the envy of all other teams.
The Hyundai A-League (the new domestic Football competition) commenced in 2005 and Adelaide United continued as a dominant force, taking out the inaugural Premiership by leading the competition, 11 points clear with 3 games to play.
Adelaide fell short of adding the Championship, when scoring form all but evaporated during the final’s playoffs.
During their first Hyundai A-League season Adelaide set numerous records, included in these were: the fastest goal (13 seconds), three top 10 goals of the season (Shengqing Qu) and the best away form in the regular season (8w, 2l, 1d).
After becoming inaugural Premiers of the Hyundai A-League, Adelaide United along with Sydney FC became the first two clubs from Australia to compete in the prestigious AFC Champions League.
With a Premiers plate, two Pre Season Cup victories and a Hyundai A-League grand final appearance, Adelaide United has been one of the most successful clubs in the Hyundai A-League and the future looks bright for both The Reds and the growing interest in the World Game in Australia.
