A bit of history:
Arubaanse Voetbal Bond was founded on 29th January 1932. Anyway, it only joined FIFA in 1988 and only entered their first World Cup qualifying in 1998. Their first game ended with a draw (1-1) against Suriname on 31st January 1934.
Aruba won their first-ever qualifying match in March of 2000, but failed to build on their humble beginnings with two straight losses to Surinam in the first of their 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany preliminaries.
In their inaugural FIFA World Cup qualifying run, for France 1998, they lost both legs of their opening tie against the Dominican Republic. Four years later, drawn against significantly more populous Puerto Rico, they claimed a famous victory at the Guillermo Prospero Trinidad Stadium. Down 2-0 at the half, the Arubans scored four times in the second period, including a brace from Lesley Felomina, to win their first qualifying match and take control of the round. In the second leg, they held on for a 2-2 draw to advance to the next home-and-away knockout contest, claim a moral victory and some much-needed smiles.
But in the latest episode of the Aruba saga, Surinam proved too powerful during Germany 2006 qualifying. A promising 2-1 defeat at home was followed up by a crushing 8-1 loss in Paramaribo with Maurice Escalona scoring the goals in each match for the Arubans.
Now, with the road to South Africa 2010 the number-one concern, little Aruba will definitely be keen to leave a better impression than last time out and revive echoes of that historic win over the Puerto Ricans.
The crest of Arubaanse Voetbal Bond is simply a circle with slightly modified Aruban coat of arms (the modification is simply that the lion upon the original coat of arms to put a foot ball). The logo is finished with the text Arubaanse Voetbal Bond. Another version was made later which add Aruban island colours (Yellow and blue) as well as the foundation date.
